Dr. Martin Dwight Woodin


Sicily Island native, Dr. Martin Dwight Woodin was born on July 7, 1915 to the marriage of Dwight E. and Gladys Martin Woodin.

After graduating from Sicily Island High School in 1932, Woodin attended Louisiana State University (LSU) where he graduated as the top student in the College of Business Administration in 1936.

In 1939, he married Virginia Johnson in West Virginia.  Following Virginia's death, he married Elisabeth Wachalik.





Dr. Woodin earned his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Economics from Cornell University prior to becoming a member of the LSU staff in 1941.

He served as a Navy lieutenant and commander of an amphibious group in the Pacific Theater during WWII.

Following his years in service, he returned to Baton Rouge and LSU. 

1956-58  Department Head, Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness
1959-60  Director of Resident Instruction, College of Agriculture
1960-62  First Dean of the LSU campus in Alexandria
1962-72  Executive Vice President of LSU
1972-85  President of Louisiana State University

 




Dr. Woodin once remarked on his time spent at LSU, "I guess I've been here all my life."

Dr. Martin Dwight Woodin died on April 18, 2006 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
