Because Everyone Deserves to be Remembered

Everyone Deserves to be Remembered

Most of my posts include photographs of tombstones.  This not only helps to confirm dates of birth and death (though some contradictions with official documents do occur), it also serves to aid other researchers attempting to connect parents, siblings, spouses and children.  The location of burial is another important aid as it usually provides clues to residency.

If you are one of many who enjoy researching your ancestors, you learn to appreciate every possible clue.  Especially when you hit the inevitable "brick wall" that happens to all of us at some point in our research.  Tombstone photographs and cemetery information found at sites like FindAGrave.com are invaluable sources of information.

As a member of the FindAGrave community, I volunteer to fulfill requests for tombstone photographs in my area.  I have yet to visit a cemetery and walk away with only having photographed the requested tombstone.

Why?  Because everyone deserves to be remembered.

A few years back, I discovered several handwritten record books stored in an old shack located near my family home place.  These books contained birth records from 1922-1941 and death records from 1918-1941.  Over 600 records have been scanned and some have been included in a few of my posts.

Because everyone deserves to be remembered, I plan to feature other records in a series of posts entitled, "Who was (name)?"  If you recognize a family member and would like a copy of the record, please leave a comment below the post or email me at rootsfromthebayou@gmail.com.

What became of Henry Clay Hooter?

Henry Clay Hooter was born in Catahoula Parish between 1853 and 1856 to the marriage of John S. Hooter and Mahala Adelaide Guice.  The 1860 and 1870 census records show Henry Clay living with his family in the Harrisonburg area of Catahoula Parish.  What became of Henry Clay Hooter after 1870?

As I research the old families of Sicily Island and surrounding areas, I often run across family members who seem to have simply disappeared.  Census records and other documents are non-existent.  This can usually be remedied by using variations of given names and surnames when searching for information.  Some census takers had very poor penmanship and transcribers often misinterpreted what was written.

The Hardin Family

Thomas Hardin was born in 1748 in Stafford County, Virginia.  In 1768 he married Lucy Billups who was born in 1747 in Virginia.  Thomas Hardin enlisted to assist in the establishment of American Independence during the Revolutionary War on February 11, 1776.  He was a member of Captain Jonathan Clarke's Company of the 8th Virginia Regiment for a two year term and was discharged in March of 1778.

Thomas and Lucy Hardin moved to North Carolina then Kentucky before finally settling in Howard County, Missouri where Thomas died circa 1828 and Lucy died circa 1833.  One of the sons born to Thomas and Lucy Hardin was Jacob Hardin.

Jacob Hardin was born in 1769 in North Carolina and remained there when his family moved west. He married Jane Porter circa 1803.  Of the children born to this marriage, it is John Calvin Hardin who would finally make his way to Louisiana.

John Calvin Hardin was born circa 1820 in North Carolina.  After moving to Alabama, he met and married Mary Ann Rollins on September 21, 1846 in Barbour County.  Mary Ann died on June 30, 1857.

The following children were born to the marriage of Calvin and Mary Ann Rollins Hardin:
Thomas Rollins
John Calvin, Jr.
Barry Baker
On January 9, 1859, Calvin married Lavina Ann Tatum Childre in Pike County, Alabama.  Lavina, a widow with three young daughters, was born in 1831.  Calvin and Lavina moved to Catahoula Parish shortly after the birth of their first child in late 1859.  They would later move to Union Parish before settling in Sabine Parish.  The 1860 census shows Calvin and Lavina Hardin living in Catahoula Parish with his three sons, her three daughters and one daughter born to them.  This same census shows Calvin Hardin's occupation as Dentist.

The following children were born to the marriage of Calvin and Lavina Tatum Childre Hardin:
