Oren and Deborah Jane Spencer Mayo Family


Oren Mayo was born in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York on February 11, 1818.  He married Deborah Jane Spencer on December 23, 1841 in Catahoula Parish.  Deborah was born on March 5, 1821 to the marriage of George Selden Spencer and Nancy Stone.


On October 9, 1844, Oren Mayo was appointed as a U.S. Postmaster for Harrisonburg.




The 1850 U.S. Census shows Oren, Deborah and two of their children living in Harrisonburg.


The 1860 U.S. Census shows the family living in the Pine Woods area of Catahoula Parish.  The census record also shows Oren's brother Joseph living in the same household.


By 1880, Oren and Deborah Mayo had moved to Concordia Parish, Louisiana.  The 1880 U.S. Census shows them living in Vidalia.  Also living in the household were two daughters, two sons-in law, and one grandchild.


Oren Mayo's years of public service:

  • 1857-1861 - 11th District Judge
  • 1873-1874 - District Attorney
  • 1880-1883 - Associate Justice, Court of Appeals

Deborah Jane Spencer Mayo died on November 20, 1880.  Oren Mayo died on July 2, 1883 in Winnsboro, Franklin Parish, Louisiana while holding a session of court.  Both are buried in the Harrisonburg Cemetery in Harrisonburg, Catahoula Parish, Louisiana.  Tombstone photograph for Deborah Jane Spencer Mayo was taken by FindAGrave member, Eva Merryman.  Tombstone photograph for Oren Mayo was taken by FindAGrave member, Shirley Burks Wells.

Asenath, 1847-1888 (m. Judge Leonard F. Mason, 1844-after 1910)

Deborah Jane, 1853-1887 (m. Judge John Stirling Boatner, 1851-1912).  Deborah Jane Mayo Boatner is buried in the Harrisonburg Cemetery in Harrisonburg, Catahoula, Louisiana.  Tombstone photograph was taken by FindAGrave member, Eve Merryman.
