The John Enright Family

From Our Island Heritage, Vols 2-3, 1977-78, compiled by Sophie Haley and Mickie Smith:

The history of the present Enright Family began on Sicily Island with the marriage of Laura Rosalie Lovelace to John Enright on November 7, 1872.  John Enright originally came from Ireland, through New York State where he fought for the Confederacy.  Later he taught school, served as Assessor and also as a Deputy Sheriff of Catahoula Parish.  Laura Lovelace, born on January 2, 1853 in Wilkerson County, Mississippi, was the daughter of Dr. Peter Edward Hughson Lovelace and Martha Lucinda Wilkerson.  Laura's great grandparents were John Lovelace and Anne Hughson.

The following children born to the marriage of John and Laura Rosalie Lovelace Enright:
Thomas Lovelace, 1873-1944 (m. Camilla Lilla Sorg)
John E, 1876
James Forsythe, 1880
Claude Ledreau, 1889-1962 (m. Vivian Martin)
Roy Lee, 1893-1918 (m. Agnes Wells)
Only Thomas, Claude and Roy lived to adulthood.

Record of Death for Laura Rosalie Lovelace Enright:

The Enright home, also known as the Sheppard home, was built in 1909 by Jim Sheppard and his wife, Mary Lovelace, who was a sister to Laura Rosalie Lovelace.  The original house had only two rooms and a porch, with an open fireplace in the main room.

It is remembered by some of the older residents that Mary Sheppard was quite deaf, but that she was an excellent piano teacher in spite of her handicap, and taught for many years.  The Sheppards had no children, so at their death, the house was passed on to Mary's sister Laura and her husband, John Enright.

John and Laura's son, Thomas Lovelace Enright, married Camilla Lilla Sorg on October 2, 1899. Lilla was born on December 15, 1876.  Her parents were Henrietta Holstein and Thomas S. Sorg.

Tom and Lilla occupied the Sheppard house and as the years passed, to accommodate their growing family, they added the ell to the house.  Later, when a brother and a nephew came to make their home with the family, an extra room was added off the south side of the house.

The last occupant of the Tom Enright house was his daughter, Julia Isabel Enright Foster.

Thomas and Lilla Enright had the following children:
Eleanor Laura, 1901-1977
Clarence Edward, 1903-1993 (m. Julia Irma Stutson)
John Sorg, 1905-1979 (m. Eunice Garrison)
Francis Joseph, 1907-1976
Julia Isabel, 1907-1989 (m. Melvin Clark Foster)
Thomas Lovelace Enright died on April 8, 1944.  Camilla Lilla Sorg Enright died on October 27, 1964.  Both are buried in the Old Pine Hill Cemetery in Sicily Island.

Claude Ledreau was born on January 7, 1899.  He married Vivian Martin, who was born on October 3, 1895.  Claude and Vivian had one son, Claude Martin.

Claude Ledreau Enright died on January 11, 1962.  Vivian Martin Enright died on December 15, 1979.  Both are buried in the Old Pine Hill Cemetery in Sicily Island.

Roy Lee was born on September 31, 1893.  He married Agnes Wells, who was born on November 11, 1897 to Harvey and Ella Coleman Wells.  They had one child, Ava, who died at birth on April 30, 1919.

Roy Lee Enright died on November 19, 1918, just five months before Agnes gave birth to Ava.  Agnes died on September 8, 1971.  Roy Lee is buried in the Old Lovelace graveyard on Gillis Place.  No tombstone photographs are available at this time.
