Descendants of William Thomas and Naomi Clark Barron

William Thomas Barron was born ca. 1782 in the area of Rock Hill, South Carolina.  He was the son of Samuel Barron and Lashoma, a Catawba Indian.  Indian Land Presbyterian Church of Rock Hill, South Carolina was built on land purchased from Lashoma's tribe.  The name Lashoma comes from the Siouan - Iriquio, which is the origination of the Catawba Tribe.  Catawba means "The River People".

Samuel and Thomas were issued passports to travel through the Creek Nations.  They settled on a piece of property in Wilkinson County, not far from the Buffalo River.

On February 1, 1809, Thomas married Naomi Clark in Burke County, Georgia.  Naomi was born in Georgia ca. 1794.  Prior to 1811, they relocated and settled in Pike County, Mississippi.

Thomas served in the War of 1812 in Captain D. T. W. Cook's Mississippi Militia, Wilkinson County.  He was discharged in New Orleans on March 31, 1815.

William Thomas Barron - Memorial Stone

Thomas Barron died when lightning struck him in Holmesville, Mississippi on August 26, 1836.  The memorial stone photograph above was taken by FindAGrave member, Dawn Taylor.  The year of birth is incorrect and should be 1781 or 1782 per family history.  The memorial stone is located on Barron land near the Old Barron Cemetery in Amite County, Mississippi.  It is believed that William Thomas Barron was buried in Holmesville, Pike County, Mississippi.  The older tombstones in the Holmesville cemetery were destroyed some years ago, preventing confirmation of his burial place.

Naomi made many applications for more land for his service in the War of 1812.  She received 40 acres issued on the 6th day of April 1852 under the Bounty Land Act of 1850.  She applied and received more acreage on March 3, 1855.  Naomi also received a widow's pension for Thomas Barron's military service in the amount of $8.00 per month, commencing on February 4, 1871.

Naomi Clark Barron died in Amite County, Mississippi on May 30, 1885.

1.  William Henry Barron, 1811-1866 (m. Malinda Felder, 1816-1896).  William and Malinda were married in Amite County, Mississippi on December 24, 1835.  At some point after 1860, they relocated to Rapides Parish, Louisiana.   The location of William's burial is unknown at this time.  Malinda is buried in the Holloway Methodist Church Cemetery in Deville, Rapides Parish, Louisiana.  (Editor's note:  obit is courtesy of Robert Lachney at FindAGrave.com and tombstone photograph is courtesy of W. William and Malinda's son, John Wesley Barron was born in Mississippi on October 18, 1839. On November 5, 1868, he married Leuvenia Richardson in Rapides Parish.  Leuvenia was born in Alabama on July 6, 1851.

John Wesley died on April 29, 1924 and Leuvenia died on July 10, 1921.  Both are buried in the Big Creek Cemetery in Pollock, Grant Parish, Louisiana.  (Editor's note:  tombstone photographs are courtesy of debmcdaniel at FindAGrave.com)

John Wesley and Leuvenia settled in Grant Parish where they raised the following children:

Of these children, it was William Thomas Barron, born on June 12, 1873, who would later move to Catahoula Parish.  On November 22, 1892, William married Emma Eloise Bailey who was born in Rapides Parish on October 21, 1872.

White Sulphur Springs Resort

Louisiana Democrat - June 30, 1880 

The stories vary on how this location received its name.

Quoting from an article written by Jack M. Willis, Journal Correspondent with The Piney Woods,

According to the renowned local historian Eli W. Plummer, White Sulphur Springs, Louisiana had its humble beginnings along about 1830.  Long before there were wagon roads, and travel was primarily by horse back, an adventurer by the name of Joseph P. Ward came upon the site which was located in what was then the western edge of the Catahoula Prairie District.  He stopped his train of horses by a beautiful spring and he and his fellow travelers decided to make camp for the night.

Ward's former home was the resort town of White Sulphur Springs, Georgia and he was bound for Texas, but when he smelled this sulphurous liquid bubbling from the spring, he may have even said, "Eureka!  I believe I'll name this locality White Sulphur Springs, Louisiana."

Edward Farris Keenan Family

Edward Farris Keenan was born in Catahoula Parish in 1849 to the marriage of Joel Keenan and Eliza "Patsy" Farris.  On August 17, 1876 he married Terridell Lee Watson who was born on March 15, 1859.

Edward died on March 6, 1926 and Terridell died on March 26, 1898.  Both are buried in the Old Pine Hill Cemetery is Sicily Island.

 

William Charles Mason Family

William Charles Mason was born in England circa 1866.  He married Martha "Mattie" Jane Mitchell in Amite County, Mississippi on May 26, 1883.

Mattie was born in the LaSalle/Catahoula Parish area on June 18, 1854 to the marriage of Charles S. Mitchell and Luanana "Lucy Ann" Louisiana Evans.  Mattie's marriage to William followed her marriages to Andrew Nelson in Franklin County, Mississippi in 1871 and a second marriage to Zachariah Carlock in Franklin County, Mississippi in 1877.

William and Mattie moved to Sicily Island between 1920 and 1930.  The 1930 census shows them living in Ward Two, Catahoula Parish.

William died on August 21, 1933 and Mattie died on September 25, 1942.  Both are believed by family to be buried in the Old Pine Hill Cemetery in Sicily Island.  Tombstone photographs are unavailable at this time.
